Why I'm scared for the future of the United States

With everything that's been going on politically in the past couple years in the U.S., I've found myself harboring a lot of anger, resentment, and frustration towards the country. I've really felt the need to direct these opinions and emotions somewhere, and this seems like the perfect platform to do so. Politics are always a heated topic, and I understand that individuals reading this post may not agree or approve of what I have to say, but that's quite alright because that's exactly what this piece of writing is: MY very own personal opinion. Although my anger is stemming mainly from the idea that a country actually elected someone as erratic and narrow-minded as Donald Trump, this post is actually going to focus more on what's been going on with the Supreme Court, specifically the decision to confirm Brett Kavanaugh. But first, I want to touch on how the Supreme Court system operates.

I can't understand why those that are hired for the Supreme Court are hired for their whole lives. Who in the world is just as quick mentally as they are at the age of 80 than they are at the age of 30? Also, the majority of the judges on the court are really, really old. At the time that most of them were born, discrimination against people of color, women, and other minorities were both widely accepted and widely practiced. These people were raised in a completely different era (kind of, at least...Each day that passes the U.S. seems to be moving back down into this deep, dark tunnel of hatred and bigotry) Do they really represent the correct thoughts and beliefs that we have in today's day and age? I'm not saying that no one should be old or a senior on the Supreme Court, I just think that it would be much more beneficial to have a mix of old and new faces, and old and new ideas. With collaboration of judges of different ages, I can only imagine that there would be more reasonable and modern decision making processes. In addition, as harsh as this sounds, these old judges won't even be around much longer to see how their decisions affect both the country and world. Maybe someone younger, who will most likely have to deal with the consequences of their decisions, may make a more informed and calculated choice.

Now that I've got that off my chest, I've really got to say something about Brett Kavanaugh, an alleged sexual predator. An alleged sexual predator who, after last week, will be taking part in making some of the most important decisions affecting the United States of America and its citizens. Even if you don't think that he did assault anyone, we can put that completely aside, and there are STILL huge problems with him being in such a position of power. First: he clearly does not have the cool, calm, and collected personality or nature that a judge needs. During the hearing, he completely lost it, and showed just how unfit of a judge he is by tearing up, yelling, and acting extremely unstable. Next, he was unbelievably rude and unprofessional to one of the women interviewing him. When she asked if he ever "blacked out from drinking," which was quite an integral question to the hearing, he responded back asking her if she'd ever blacked out. She has NOTHING to do with him blacking out, and I have no doubt that he would have never have asked a male that question. He seems as if has a real lack of respect for women. This was also just an example of him losing his composure, yet again. These are huge issues that don't even reflect the biggest problem of them all: he very well could be a sexual predator.

Christine Blasey Ford had absolutely nothing to gain from this ordeal. She had to admit to something she was embarrassed and ashamed of, she had to speak about it on national television, and she had to fear for her and her family's safety. I don't see why she would put herself in this position, other than trying to help keep a truly evil individual out of the Supreme Court. In addition, she mentioned Kavanaugh by name to her husband years previously, and also mentioned being sexually assaulted in high school to her therapist. Also, the contrast between her disturbing, yet informative and sad testimony and Kavanaugh's loud, obnoxious, and bizarre testimony was stark. Her testimony seemed genuine, his seemed defensive. The idea of Brett Kavanaugh making decisions on behalf of the Supreme Court until the day he dies is truly terrifying. All I can is that I'm happy that I don't live in the United States, but even then, being next door neighbors to the country is becoming a little too close for comfort.

Time to Deck the Halls!

Looking back on my thoughts about Christmas as a child, it's so funny to see how my outlook has changed. When I was little, I wouldn't be able to get to sleep at night because I was so excited about the gifts I would be receiving the next morning. What will my parents get me? What will my grandparents get me? Most importantly - what will Santa get me?! It was all about the magic of receiving gifts. Nowadays, Christmas is still all about the magic, but the intangible magic. The satisfaction you get from finding or making the most fitting, perfect present for a loved one; and happiness you feel when you see them open that gift; the quality time you get to spend with friends and family members you haven't seen in a while, and the general warm, cozy feeling that the holiday gives you. You start to see the value in giving, rather than receiving. In high school, my friends and I used to always do a Secret Santa gift exchange, and spend about $30 or so on one another. The past...

Things to do and see in Hamilton

People make fun of Hamilton a lot. They say it's all factories, that it's ugly, that it's a little "sketchy." Well, I am here to prove that those ideas are dead  wrong . Hamilton is a beautiful , vibrant city with heaps and heaps to offer. Let me start with the nature: 1. Waterfalls - Hamilton is actually considered the waterfall capital of the world, with over 100 waterfalls and cascades, all here in our city! You can't consider that ugly. 2. Princess Point - An absolutely beautiful area in the west end of Hamilton. There are trails around the waterfront, and I've seen all sorts of animals there including deer, fish, geese, ducks, and fox. It's also a fantastic place to go for a picnic or watch the sunset.  3. The Bruce Trail - Canada's oldest and longest footpath goes through Hamilton. It's a great hike, and you can catch a glimpse of some of the waterfalls mentioned above as well! There are so many more places to wa...
